TransAfrica is pleased to announce the unveiling ceremony for a new statue honoring former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. We will join the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa and leaders from the anti-apartheid Free South Africa Movement in celebrating the new statue and the righteous fight it represents.

The statue is nine feet tall and depicts Nelson Mandela as he walked out of prison and into freedom in February 1990. It is a twin to a statue that stands at the place where he stepped into freedom – at the Victor Verster prison near Cape Town, South Africa.

The placement of the statue is symbolic as well: it will stand in the same place where thousands of Americans were arrested in the 1980’s while protesting and demanding the end of apartheid and Mandela’s release. TransAfrica’s Founder, Randall Robinson, and many of our leaders and closest allies were among those arrested for their actions to end apartheid in South Africa.

The statue unveiling is a wonderful moment to celebrate the life, legacy and values of Nelson Mandela.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool will host a picnic at the statue. The ceremony starts at 11 am and you will be asked to be at the site by 10.30 am. Seating will be on the west side of Massachusetts Ave, across from the South African mission and in front of the British ambassador's residence and the embassy of Bolivia.

Space is limited and this page will be taken down as soon as available slots are filled on a first come, first serve basis, so please be sure to sign up as soon as possible.
